Ripartono oggi le qualificazioni asiatiche per la FIFA World Cup 2022 di Qatar e abbiamo pensato di scrivere un breve articolo per riassumere il formato della competizione da dove usciranno le 4 nazionali asiatiche che prenderanno parte alla fase a gironi del mondiale, più una quinta che si contenderà l’accesso alla coppa del mondo tramite il play-off intercontinentale.
Primo Turno
Al primo turno hanno partecipato i peggiori 12 team asiatici secondo il ranking FIFA di aprile 2019, ovvero le selezioni comprese tra il 35esimo e il 46esimo posto AFC. Il sorteggio degli incontri ha inserito le prime sei squadre tra le teste di serie, le quali hanno disputato la partita di ritorno in casa.
Le altre 34 nazionali hanno invece avuto l’accesso diretto al secondo turno.
Dal dicembre 2020 la NMIFA (l’Associazione Calcistica delle Isole Marianne Settentrionali) è divenuta a pieno titolo un membro dell’AFC, quindi prenderà parte a tutti i prossimi tornei continentali comprese le Asian Qualifiers 2026.
Gli incontri si sono disputati dal 6 all’11 giugno 2019, con i seguenti risultati:
Secondo Turno
Le 6 vincitrici del primo turno e le altre 34 nazionali danno vita al secondo turno, che prevede una fase a gironi composta da otto gruppi da 5 squadre l’uno. Per il sorteggio le 40 selezioni sono state suddivise in 5 fasce secondo il ranking di giugno 2019 ed è per questo che la Malaysia si trova in quarta fascia e non in quinta.
Le prime classificate accedono al turno successivo insieme alle migliori 4 seconde, le quali conquistano così anche la qualificazione all’Asian Cup 2023. Ma attenzione, siccome le Asian Qualifiers sono propedeutiche anche alla qualificazione per la coppa d’Asia vi partecipa anche il Qatar, ammesso di diritto alla prossima FIFA World Cup in quanto nazione ospitante. Dunque, se il Qatar dovesse vincere il suo girone o arrivare tra le prime quattro otterrà l’accesso all’Asian Cup 2023 ma non avanzerà al terzo turno per ovvi motivi, e il suo posto verrà preso dalla quinta migliore seconda.
Inoltre, in quanto la nazionale di calcio nordcoreana si è ritirata dal torneo, la classifica delle migliori seconde non prenderà in considerazione i risultati ottenuti contro la squadra piazzatasi ultima nel girone, così da ottenere un piazzamento più equo.
La fase a gironi ha preso il via il 5 settembre 2019 e terminerà con la decima giornata il prossimo 15 giugno.

Le tre peggiori seconde e tutte le squadre piazzatesi dal terzo al quinto posto non hanno più possibilità di accedere al mondiale, ma prendono parte al torneo di qualificazione per l’Asian Cup 2023.
Terzo Turno
Il terzo turno si svolgerà tra il 2 settembre 2021 e il 29 marzo 2022 e vedrà due gironi composti da sei squadre l’uno. Al termine dei dieci turni le prime due classificate si qualificano alla fase a gironi della FIFA World Cup 2022, mentre entrambe le terze accedono al quarto turno.
Per il sorteggio dei gruppi le dodici selezioni saranno divise in sei fasce da due squadre ciascuna.
Quarto Turno
Le terze classificate del turno precedente prendono parte ad uno scontro diretto a gara secca che si giocherà tra maggio e luglio 2022. La vincente accederà al play-off intercontinentale.
Play-off intercontinentale
Alle quattro nazionali asiatiche già qualificatesi tramite il terzo turno può aggiungersi la vincente del quarto turno. Questa disputerà il play-off intercontinentale, ovvero un incontro andata e ritorno in programma a giugno 2022, contro una selezione nordamericana, sudamericana o oceaniana. La vincente parteciperà alla FIFA World Cup 2022.

The Asian qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar restart today and we thought to write a short article to summarize the format of the competition that selects: the 4 Asian national teams that will take part in the group stage of the World Cup, plus a fifth that will compete for access to the World Cup through the intercontinental play-off.
First Round

Second Round
The 6 winners of the first round and the other 34 national teams give life to the second round, which includes a group stage consisting of eight groups of 5 teams each. For the draw, the 40 selections were divided into 5 brackets according to the June 2019 ranking, which is why Malaysia is in the fourth bracket and not the fifth.
The first-place finishers enter the next round together with the best 4 second-place finishers, who thus also gain qualification for the Asian Cup 2023. But be careful, since the Asian Qualifiers are also preparatory to qualification for the Asian Cup, Qatar will also participate, and will be admitted by right to the next FIFA World Cup as host nation. The three worst second-place finishers and all teams placed from third to fifth have no more chances to enter the World Cup, but take part in the qualification tournament for the Asian Cup 2023.
Third Round

The winner of the fourth round will participate in the intercontinental play-off, a return match scheduled for June 2022, against a North American, South American or Oceanian selection. The winner will participate in the FIFA World Cup 2022.
