Il calcio contemporaneo è un’ attività di money-making tre le più remunerative del pianeta. Nei bilanci delle società e sugli schermi dei nostri smartphone i numeri si affastellano gli uni sugli altri senza soluzione di continuità. I club più importanti sono sempre più simili a corporation. Noi tifosi, ci mettiamo del nostro, come quando ci strappiamo i capelli perché la nostra squadra ha speso 100 milioni per quello o l’altro attaccante. Siamo diventati clienti a cui offrire un servizio, senza che nemmeno ce ne rendessimo conto o magari ce ne siamo resi conto ma c’è andato bene così.
Vista in questa modo la situazione è abbastanza tragica e forse lo è davvero. Però c’è anche altro. Il calcio ha un’altra dimensione, che è legata a qualcosa di più profondo, e che si chiama passione.
In quella porzione di realtà possono succedere piccoli miracoli come quella che state per leggere.
1. LA CADUTA: THAI LEAGUE 2018
Nel 2018 la FAT (Football Association of Thailand) prima dell’ultima giornata di campionato decise di ridurre il numero di squadre nella Thai League 1 – con conseguente retrocessione di cinque club invece dei soliti tre alla fine di quell’anno. Una scelta pazzesca dettata dalla totale disorganizzazione che fece piombare nella tragedia 2 club che erano sicuri della salvezza.
Una di queste fu anche il BG Bathum United – che allora si chiamava Bangkok Glass – presente nella Thai Premier League dal 2006. In quegli 11 anni arrivò costantemente nelle prime cinque posizioni del campionato, con il picco del terzo posto nel 2016 e la vittoria della FA Cup nel 2014. Con il passare del tempo il club diventò il simbolo di spettacolo e bel gioco. Un connubio difficile da trovare nel campionato Thai, che avvicinò molti “nuovi tifosi” ai Rabbits.
Il 2018 partì con l’ingaggio in panchina dello spagnolo Josep María Ferré Ybarz – oggi assistente agli East Bengal in ISL – che fino ad allora aveva avuto solo esperienze da vice o tattico. L’inizio in campionato è disastroso e con 0 vittorie in 7 partite. La dirigenza cacciò Ferré, promuovendo il suo assistente Amnaj Kaewkiew, ex giocatore del club appena ritiratosi. Una scelta per placare la piazza, nella migliore tradizione del calcio delle nostre parti. Ma anche questa scelta non pagò, perché il club precipitò in quattordicesima posizione, frutto di 3 sconfitte in 6 partite.
Alla dirigenza, ormai totalmente nel panico, non rimase che richiamare per la 4a volta Anurak Srikerd, leggenda del club e del calcio thailandese. Ma il problema principale di quella stagione non era in panchina, ma in campo. Il mercato fu un’accozzaglia di figurine, composti da grandi nomi che però interagivano malissimo tra loro.
Il girone di ritorno fu ancora più disastroso del precedente e la squadra retrocesse tra le lacrime di migliaia di tifosi.
2. LA RISALITA: THAI LEAGUE 2 2019
La stagione di Thai League 2 2019 parte con una rivoluzione. Il board del club cambia il nome del club in BP Pathum United, sotto la spinta del nuovo sponsor la provincia di Pathum Thani. Il cammino per il ritorno in Thai League 1 non presenta grandi difficoltà e il BP arriva prima con 78 punti tenendo la seconda classificata a 13 lunghezze di vantaggio. La rosa è composta da stranieri di alto livello come i brasiliani Jonatan Reis e Tardeli, il giapponese Kojima o il singaporiano Irfan Fandi– colonna della squadra anche nella stagione 2020. Ma neppure il più sfegatato tifoso dei Rabbits poteva prevedere quello che sarebbe successo la stagione successiva.

3. LA VITTORIA: THAI LEAGUE 2020(2021)
La Thai League 1 2020 si sarebbe dovuta disputare da febbraio a ottobre 2020. Il campionato è partito come prevista, poi, arrivati alla quarta giornata, è stato interrotto per lo scoppio della pandemia ed è ripreso soltanto a settembre, tanto che la stagione è ancora in corso.
Il PB Pathum United non partiva con i favori del pronostico ma fin dalle prime battute della Thai League 1 2020 i Rabbits hanno dimostrato di poter vincere agilmente il campionato.
Lo score fino a questo punto è clamoroso.
Primo posto in classifica con 77 punti frutto di 24 vittorie, 5 pareggi e 0 sconfitte e 17 punti di vantaggio sulla seconda. Un successo trionfale.
Il miglior marcatore della squadra è il difensore centrale brasiliano classe 1989 Victor Mattos Cardozo, capace di mettere a segno 15 goal in 27 partite, grazie ai rigori di cui è specialista e primo tiratore designato
La star dei Rabbits è Diogo Luis Santo, attaccante brasiliano classe 1987, che ha giocato nell’Oympiacos (Grecia) e nel Santos (Brasile), con cui ha vinto una Copa Libertadores nel 2011. E’ uno dei più grandi giocatori stranieri ad aver mai calcato i campi di gioco thailandesi. Autore di 101 goal in 105 presenze con il Buriram United. Ha vinto 4 Thai League 1 ed è stato capocannoniere del campionato 2 volte. Arrivato soltanto all’inizio del 2021, ha comunque messo a segno 7 goal in 12 presenze.
Visto il trionfale campionato di quest’anno, il BG Pathum United ha tutte le carte in regola per candidarsi a sorpresa della prossima AFC Champions League 2021 e ben figurare. Per aiutare la squadra in questa impresa la dirigenza si è assicurata il cartellino del capitano della nazionale thailandese, Teerasil Dangda. I tifosi non vogliono svegliarsi da questo sogno e perché dovremmo farlo noi? Shhhht….

Contemporary soccer is one of the most profitable money-making activities on the planet. In the balance sheets of clubs and on the screens of our smartphones, the numbers are piled on top of each other without interruption. The most important clubs are more and more like corporations. As fans, we put our own spin on it, like when we tear our hair out because our team spent 100 million on that or that striker. We have become customers to whom we offer a service, without even realizing it, or maybe we did realize it, but we were fine with it.
Seen in this way the situation is quite tragic and perhaps it really is. But there is also something else. Soccer has another dimension, which is linked to something deeper, and that is called passion.
1. THE FALL: THAI LEAGUE 2018
In 2018 the FAT (Football Association of Thailand) before the last day of the championship decided to reduce the number of teams in Thai League 1 – resulting in the relegation of five clubs instead of the usual three at the end of that year. A crazy choice dictated by total disorganization that plunged 2 clubs that were sure of salvation into tragedy.
One of these was BG Bathum United – then called Bangkok Glass – present in the Thai Premier League since 2006. In those 11 years it consistently finished in the top five of the league, peaking in third place in 2016 and winning the FA Cup in 2014. As time went on, the club became the epitome of spectacle and beautiful game. A combination hard to find in the Thai league, which brought many “new fans” closer to the Rabbits.
The 2018 started with the hiring on the bench of the Spaniard Josep María Ferré Ybarz – now assistant at East Bengal in ISL – who until then had only had experience as a deputy or tactician. The start in the championship was disastrous with 0 victories in 7 games. The management kicked Ferré out, promoting his assistant Amnaj Kaewkiew, a former player of the club who had just retired. A choice to appease the square, in the best tradition of soccer in our parts. But even this choice did not pay off, because the club plummeted to fourteenth position, the result of 3 defeats in 6 games.
The management, by now totally panicked, had no choice but to recall Anurak Srikerd, a legend of the club and of Thai soccer, for the 4th time. But the main problem of that season was not on the bench, but on the field. The market was a jumble of cards, made up of big names that interacted badly with each other.
The second round was even more disastrous than the previous one and the team was relegated amidst the tears of thousands of fans.
2. LA RISALITA: THAI LEAGUE 2 2019
The 2019 Thai League 2 season starts with a revolution. The board of the club changes the name of the club to BP Pathum United, under the push of the new sponsor the province of Pathum Thani. The path to return to Thai League 1 presents no major difficulties and BP comes first with 78 points holding the runners-up to 13 lengths ahead. 3. LA VITTORIA: THAI LEAGUE 2020(2021)
Thai League 1 2020 was supposed to be played from February to October 2020. The league started as planned, then, arrived at the fourth day, was interrupted for the outbreak of the pandemic and resumed only in September, so that the season is still ongoing.
PB Pathum United did not start with the favors of prediction, but from the very first bars of Thai League 1 2020 the Rabbits have shown they can easily win the championship.
The score up to this point is sensational.
First place in the standings with 77 points, the result of 24 victories, 5 draws and 0 defeats, and a 17 point lead over the second place team. A triumphal success.
