The 2020 season of Jiangsu Suning, the new champions of China

Our journey starts from afar, we are in the winter session of 2016, the most important for the Chinese Super League as the championship usually starts around February/March and ends in November. At that time the Chinese league was experiencing a real revolution both economically (given the enormous growth in GDP in previous years) and in sport. The latter was endorsed by Xi Jinping, leader of the People’s Republic of China, who believed he could use sport to increase China’s fame and importance in the world. This phenomenon was divided into two main actions: the acquisition of important European clubs (Inter, Milan, WBA, Wolves, Granada, Espanyol, etc.) and the raising of the level of its domestic league through the acquisition of strong foreign players.

As far as the rules are concerned, in the current Chinese Super League a maximum of 4 foreign players can play, not counting the naturalized ones (a phenomenon that has been growing a lot in the last period, among the most famous are Alan, Goulart and Elkeson), moreover it is compulsory to field at least one Under-23 and to summon at least one more, finally it is forbidden to buy and then field foreign goalkeepers. These precautionary measures have been taken to try to stem the numerous purchases of foreign players, trying to enhance themselves by increasing the level of their players, with a particular attention to young people (who for a cultural issue are more difficult to impose themselves) and goalkeepers, who for years have been considered a weak point of the movement.

But back to us, that famous market session of the 2015/2016 season radically changed our perception of Asian football and, more generally, of non-European football because we had never seen 469 ML spent (of which 338 in the winter session and 131 in the summer session). In the last few years, in fact, there has been a real wave of migration that has led to the import of top level players and in the first of their careers such as Oscar, Hulk, Jackson Martinez, Talisca, Witsel, Paulinho, Bakambu, Rondon, Gervinho, Ferreira Carrasco, Hamsik and we could go on again. Not to mention the arrival of many prominent coaches including: Roger Schmidt, Villas Boas, Bruno Genesio, Benitez, Sven Goran Eriksson, Cannavaro, Lippi and Capello who, thanks to their experience and their playing philosophies, have greatly enriched the Chinese Super League.

In that winter session a team, Jiangsu Suning, distinguished itself, which had recently changed its name (previously it was called Jiangsu Sainty) following the transfer of ownership to the Suning Group by Zhang Jindong. The ownership came with two phenomenal signings: Alex Teixeira (50 ML) and Ramires (28 ML). In that season the team took second place behind Guangzhou Evergrande (the most titled team in China with 8 Championships and 2 Asian Championships). On the bench the team was led by Romanian Dan Petrescu and thanks to the performances of Alex Teixeira (11 Goals and 10 assists) and Roger Martinez (10 goals and 4 assists in the middle of the championship) the team had a clear improvement compared to the last seasons.

Despite this exploit, the following year was very negative and even risked relegation. After the exoneration of Petrescu was called Fabio Capello who managed to save the team but after only 3 games of the new league he consensually terminated the contract favouring the arrival of the current coach, Cosmin Olăriou. The Romanian coach can be considered a real Asian football guru with 1 Saudi championship, 4 United Arab Emirates championships and countless national cups. In that year the team recovered from the slums and finished fifth, but lost the chance to enter the Asian Championships, as to participate in them it is necessary to be ranked among the top 3 in the championship or win the national cup. The following season saw the arrival of Eder from Inter, but despite this the team was unable to take another step, finishing fourth in the championship but remaining outside the Championships again, taking a gap of 19 points from Guangzhou Evergrande, the winner.

Tactical team analysis 2020/2021

The team is based around its 4 best players: the Brazilians Miranda and Teixeira, the Italian-Brazilian Eder and the Ghanaian box to box Wakaso. Not to forget also the Croatian Ivan Santini who has provided a more than valid alternative to the Eder-Teixeira team.

Among the prominent Chinese players, the team’s captain and director, Xi Wu and the experienced central defender Ang Li, as well as the attacking outside Xiang Ji, with his left hand on Velcro, deserve a mention.

Coach Cosmin Olăriu alternated several modules during the season while remaining true to his principles, the most widely used line-up was 4-4-2. In the possession phase the first construction is very simple and rudimentary and is entrusted to the 4 defenders plus the 2 midfielders. The goalkeeper and the defenders are required to risk as little as possible, in fact the team does not disdain throws to look for their own tips (in the feet or in depth) and is very aggressive in the attack of the second balls.

The width is guaranteed by the high exteriors, while the full-backs often remain blocked to guarantee numerical superiority in the defensive phase. Positive transitions are very important for Jiangsu Suning as they try to exploit the disorganisation of the opposing team to look for a vertical track for their own tips, on which the offensive responsibilities of the team fall almost completely.

An interesting alternative that is proposed in the offensive phase is the centralization of one of the two outsiders, either to go to the end or to imbecile the depth on the weak side.

The phase of non-possession of the team is the one that identifies it most tactically. In fact Jiangsu defends with a very narrow and compact 4-4-2 that aims to defend and clog the centre of the field. The centre of gravity of the team is medium low with the first pressure that starts to be felt at the height of the midfield.

Despite this is the standard defensive attitude, the team manages to interpret different scores by raising the pressure line of the two outsiders when the opposing team makes mistakes or when the game is concentrated along one of the two bands, when it becomes easier to close the spaces. In defensive side fouls Jiangsu Suning concentrates the players on the strong side to prevent the opposing team from progressing with the manoeuvre and to facilitate ball recovery. The low-medium height of the team in the defensive phase favours attacks in transition with plenty of field to exploit in order to trigger the speed of their attackers.

An unexpected victory

The current season, following the problems linked to the Covid-19, saw a clear change by abandoning the single round formula and dividing the championship into two rounds, each made up of 8 teams based on last season’s placings.

The first 4 of each mini-league would have qualified for the playoff in Nba style with the difference that the direct clashes would have been played in 2 games (round trip) with the 8 qualified teams that would have immediately crossed each other according to the position obtained in their own mini-league (1st of group A vs 4th of group B etc.).

Jiangsu Suning, after having qualified as second in their group, behind the GZ Evergrande, made itself the protagonist of a memorable ride, overtaking Chongqing Lifan in the quarter finals with a total score of 2-1 and in the semifinals the fearsome Shanghai SIPG of Hulk, Arnautovic and Oscar with a score of 3-2 only after overtime and after a numerical inferiority suffered from the minute 57′.

In the final after the 0-0 of the first match, everything was decided in the return match where, thanks to the goals of two champions like Eder and Teixeira, Jiangsu managed to win the first championship in its history.

The team’s future is now shrouded in mystery as Eder and Teixeira have a short-term contract (the latter could even be naturalized and move to Shanghai Sipg) while Miranda is talking about a possible return to Brazil to end his career. Mr. Cosmin Olăroiu himself has also expressed doubts about his possible stay as he will want all the reassurances of the case both on and off the field. Nevertheless, this exciting victory is the first real important trophy of a team belonging to the Suning Group, hoping that it will also bode well for “the other team” of the Suning Group.
