La nostra intervista esclusiva con Leonardo Rodriguez Pereira, attaccante brasiliano in forza al Tianjin Tianhai nella Chinese Super League, nel 2016 ha vinto l’AFC Champions League con i coreani del Jeonbuk Hyundai segnando una doppietta in finale.
Ricordo ancora nitidamente i quarti di finale della AFC Champions League del 2016 fra lo Shanghai Sipg ed il Jeonbuk Hyundai. Ero curioso di vedere cosa sarebbe stato in grado di fare la squadra cinese, che da poco aveva ingaggiato nientemeno che Hulk, inserendolo in un contesto super offensivo con Elkeson, Dariò Conca e la star locale Wu Lei. Quel giorno però, lo Shanghai Sipg fu travolto per 5-0 dal Jeonbuk e Hulk fu messo completamente in ombra da uno strabiliante Leonardo Rodriguez Pereira, il numero 10 del Jeonbuk che segnò due gol oltre a servire un assist.
I primi anni in Grecia
Quella di Leonardo è una carriera molto particolare, e possiamo dire che inizia in Grecia, dove si trasferì all’età di soli 18 anni: “Ho debuttato da professionista al Desportiva capixaba e subito ho ricevuto un’offerta dalla Grecia. Ho deciso di accettare questa proposta per andare in Europa, prima con il Thrasivoulos, poi con il Levadiakos ed infine con l’AEK. Con la squadra di Atene ho giocato dal 2009 al 2012 ed abbiamo vinto la Coppa nazionale nel 2011. Fu un risultato molto importante per me e per il club.”
All’età di 25 anni, dopo essere diventato un simbolo del club di Atene, ed aver i parato persino a parlare il greco in maniera fluente, la carriera di Leonardo prese una piega inaspettata, con il trasferimento in Corea del Sud. “La stagione 2011/12 fu la migliore per me con l’AEK, fui in grado di segnare tanti gol che hanno contribuito ad un buon piazzamento finale. Alla fine della stagione ho ricevuto un’offerta dal Jeonbuk e con la mia famiglia abbiamo deciso di trasferirci in Corea. Ripensandoci anche ora sono sicuro del fatto che sia stata la miglior decisione presa in carriera. Il processo di adattamento è stato lento, a causa di una differente cultura e stile di gioco. Nel 2012 ho concluso la stagione cercando di apprendere e calarmi nel nuovo contesto ogni giorno per poi migliorare le mie prestazioni anno dopo anno.”
Sul trono d’Asia
Arriviamo dunque alla stagione 2016, quella in cui Leonardo ha dato il meglio di se, dove ha condotto il Jeonbuk Hyundai a vincere la AFC Champions League da assoluto protagonista di quell’annata: “Il 2016 è stato un anno spettacolare, ricordo ogni momento, vincere la Champions era un desiderio che avevo da quando sono arrivato in Asia. Nel 2016 ce l’abbiamo fatta e la nostra squadra è entrata nella storia del club, personalmente feci molto bene segnando 10 gol in tutto il torneo. E’ stato un percorso molto difficile per giocatori e staff, ma dopo la vittoria con lo Shanghai Sipg sapevamo di potercela fare. In semifinale abbiamo sconfitto il Seoul, mentre nell’atto conclusivo del torneo ce la siamo vista contro l’Al Ain. Sapevamo che non sarebbe stato facile, ma grazie a dio abbiamo ottenuto un buon risultato in casa ed abbiamo mantenuto il vantaggio nella sfida di ritorno, il che ci ha permesso di diventare campioni”.
Verso il Medio Oriente
Leonardo fu il vice capocannoniere della AFC Champions League del 2016 e fu proprio lui a segnare una doppietta nella vittoria nella finale d’andata per 2-1 contro l’Al Ain. Dopo quella strabiliante annata per il numero 10 del Jeonbuk era arrivato il momento di cambiare aria, con il trasferimento verso il Medio oriente, fra Emirati Arabi Uniti e Arabia Saudita. “Dopo aver vinto la Champions ed aver giocato per quattro anni e mezzo in Corea del Sud per me e mia moglie era tempo di nuove esperienze e l’Al Jazira (UAE) ci aprì le sue porte. Giocai nel campionato degli Emirati per un anno e mezzo, vincendo il campionato nel 2017, poi per un anno mi sono trasferito in Arabia Saudita con l’Al Nassr. Sono state entrambe esperienze fantastiche, vorrei ringraziare entrambi i club per questi due anni e mezzo. Di certo lo stile di vita era diverso, ma non è stato difficile adattarsi”.
Il ritorno ad Est – Cina
17 gol e 14 assist negli Emirati Arabi Uniti, 10 gol e 3 assist in Arabia Saudita: questi gli strabilianti numeri di Leonardo nei due anni e mezzo in Medio oriente, che lo avrebbero proiettato verso qualsiasi top club asiatico. Invece il brasiliano lo scorso anno è approdato in Cina, al Tianjin Tianhai, club che era coinvolto in una dura lotta salvezza: “Lo scorso anno ho ricevuto l’invito da parte del Tianjin Tianhai per aiutare il club a salvarsi. Ho dedicato tutto al club, mettendo da parte i miei obiettivi personali. Alla fine ce l’abbiamo fatta ed anche i miei gol in qualche modo hanno contribuito a raggiungere dell’obiettivo. Quest’anno ci aspetta una stagione totalmente diversa e speriamo che le cose possano andare per il meglio. – Leonardo racconta anche di come è la situazione a Tianjin in questo momento, con la vita che sta ripartendo normalmente, tanto che è tornato ad allenarsi con il suo club in attesa della partenza della Chinese Super League. –E’ un momento molto delicato, il mondo sta soffrendo a causa di questo virus. Dobbiamo prenderci cura gli uni degli altri e rispettare le autorità restando a casa. La Cina deve essere un esempio per gli altri paesi. Grazie a dio qua a Tianjin le cose stanno ripartendo regolarmente, ma dobbiamo prendere ancora tutte le precauzioni possibili.”
All’età di 33 anni, abbiamo chiesto infine a Leonardo quali sono i suoi piani per il futuro, se gli piacerebbe continuare a giocare in Asia, oppure tornare in Grecia o Brasile. “Prego Dio per il mio futuro, conosce il miglior percorso per ognuno di noi. Il mio desiderio è di rimanere in Asia, che sia Cina, Corea o Emirati. Ma dio sa tutto ed io e la mia famiglia siamo pronti a qualsiasi tipo di sfida.”

Interview to Leonardo Rodriguez Pereira: “2016 was an amazing year with Jeonbuk”
All Asian Football had an interview with Leonardo Rodriguez Pereira. The brazilian football player is part of Tianjin Tianhai in the Chinese Super League and in 2016, he won the AFC Champions League with the korean side Jeonbuk Hyundai, scoring 10 goals in the competition.
I still clearly remember the 2016 AFC Champions League quarter-finals between Shanghai Sipg and Jeonbuk Hyundai. I was curious to see what the Chinese team -who had recently purchased for a record fee the brazilian star Hulk- would have been able to do. That day, however, the Shanghai Sipg was overwhelmed 5-0 by Jeonbuk and Hulk was completely overshadowed by an amazing Leonardo Rodriguez Pereira, the number 10 of the Jeonbuk who scored two goals and served an assist.
The first years in Greece
The carreer of Leonardo is very particular, and we can say that it starts in Greece, where he moved at the age of 18: “I made my professional debut at Desportiva capixaba and immediately received an offer from Greece. I decided to accept this proposal to go to Europe, first with the Thrasivoulos, then with the Levadiakos and finally with the AEK. With the Athens team I played from 2009 to 2012 and we won the national cup in 2011. It was a very important result for me and the club. “
At the age of 25, after becoming a symbol of the club in Athens, and having even learened to speak Greek fluently, Leonardo’s career took an unexpected turn, with the transfer to South Korea. “The 2011/12 season was the best for me with AEK, I was able to score many goals that contributed to a good final placement. At the end of the season I received an offer from Jeonbuk and with my family we decided to move to Korea. Thinking back on it even now I’m sure it was the best decision made in my career. The adaptation process was slow due to a different culture and style of play. In 2012 I ended the season trying to learn and get into the new context every day and then improve my performance years after year. “
Leonardo Rodriguez Pereira on the Top of Asia
So let’s get to the 2016 season, the one in which Leonardo gave his best, where he led the Jeonbuk Hyundai to win the AFC Champions League as the absolute protagonist of that year: “2016 was a spectacular year, I remember every moment, winning the Champions League was a wish I had since I arrived in Asia. In 2016 we did it and our team entered the club’s history, personally I did very well by scoring 10 goals throughout the tournament. It was a very difficult path for players and staff, but after the victory with Shanghai Sipg we knew we could do it. In the semifinal we defeated Seoul, while in the final act of the tournament we saw it against Al Ain. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but thank god we got a good result at home and we kept the lead in the second leg, which allowed us to become champions. “
A new experience in Middle-East
Leonardo was the second top scorer of the 2016 AFC Champions League and also managed to score twice in the 2-1 first leg victory against Al Ain. After that amazing year for Jeonbuk number 10, it was time to change, with the transfer to the Middle East, between the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. “After winning the Champions League and playing for four and a half years in South Korea, it was time for new experiences for me and my wife and Al Jaazira (UAE) opened its doors to us. I played in the Emirates championship for a year and a half, winning the league in 2017, then for a year I moved to Saudi Arabia with Al Nassr. Both have been fantastic experiences, I would like to thank both clubs for these two and a half years. Of course, the lifestyle was different, but it was not difficult to adapt. “
The return in the East Zone, China
17 goals and 14 assists in the United Arab Emirates, 10 goals and 3 assists in Saudi Arabia: these are Leonardo’s amazing numbers in the two and a half years in the Middle East, which would have projected him towards any top Asian club. Instead the Brazilian last year landed in China, at Tianjin Tianhai, a club that was involved in a tough fight to avoid relegation: “Last year I received an invitation from Tianjin Tianhai to help the club save itself. I dedicated everything to the club, setting aside my personal goals. In the end we did it and even my goals somehow helped the club. This year, a totally different season awaits us and we hope that things will go well. – Leonardo also talks about what the situation is like in Tianjin, a city that is recovering from the global emergency and life seems is going back to normal. The Football club is training these days, waiting for the beginning of the Chinese Super League. – It is a very delicate moment, the world is suffering from this virus. We must take care of each other and respect the authorities by staying at home. China must be an example for other countries. Thank god here in Tianjin things are restarting regularly, but we must still take all possible precautions.”
At the age of 33, we finally asked Leonardo what his plans are for the future, if he would like to continue playing in Asia, or return to Greece or Brazil. “I pray to God for my future, he knows the best path for each of us. My desire is to stay in Asia, be it China, Korea or the Emirates. But god knows everything and me and my family are ready for any kind of challenge. “
