It was more then a decade since when Chinese Players moved to European Football to prove their talent: from Sun Jihai to Manchester City and Li Tie at Everton at the beginning of 00′ years, to Hao Junming at Schalke 04 in 2010. But since then, there was a period where Chinese Players completely failed in Europe, until this football season, where Wu Lei (Espanyol) and Wang Shuang (PSG Ladies for female football) shined on the international stage with the achieve of big results.
During the last decade, Chinese players were able to make their name in Europe: on January 2015 Zhang Xizhe moved from Beijing Guoan to Wolfsburg where he never played and then came back to China during the summer transfer window. It was clear that the purchase of the Chinese player was just a commercial operation by Volkswagen. The next year, in summer, Zhang Chengdong moved from Beijing Guoan to Rayo Vallecano (La Liga) in a controversial operation that was promoted by Qbao, at that time the main sponsor of the Spanish side. Also Zhang Yuning, currently striker of Beijing Guoan, after the very first promising period on the Vitesse side in Eredivisie, he failed to find a stable position and then completely lost himself on loan experience between Germany (Werder Brema) and then Holland again (Ado Den Haag).
While China failed to export quality players in Europe in the last years, Japan and South Korea are able to do it regularly, and not only in the old continent, but even on the big sides of the Middle East, in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Only in 2018\19 something changed for China, with the move of the two biggest players, male and female, Wu Lei and Wang Shuang.
Wu Lei journey’s in Spain
Wu Lei (28), is the biggest name in Chinese Football: in 2018 he was awarded as MVP and Goalscorer of the Chinese Super League that he won with Shanghai Sipg. After a upside down Asian Cup, where he played with a shoulder injury, scoring two amazing goals against Philippines in the group stage, he finally made his move to Europe, to the Chinese owned side Espanyol. Wu Lei made his debut at the first occasion, on the 3th of February on the last 12 minutes of a 2-2 draw against Villareal.
The former Sipg star was able to adapt himself very quickly to a new football context, making his debut on the starting XI on the third match against Valencia (0-0) and then scored the first goal on the fifth game he played on a 3-1 win against Rayo Vallecano, a net that was largely celebrated by media, even from La Liga and Real Madrid. After two consecutive defeats against Sevilla and Barcellona, where Wu lei faced Lionel Messi without impressing, Espanyol began an unstoppable march from the battle to avoid the relegation till the qualification at 2019\20 Europa League with 5 won and 4 draw.
After be sitting on the match for the whole match against Levante, Wu Lei scored an amazing bicycle kick goal on round 34 against Celta Vigo on a 1-1 draw, while in the last round of La Liga, he scored the definitive 2-0 against Real Sociedad, a result that allowed Espanyol to reach the qualification for the European competition next year. On that occasion, Wu Lei was awarded with the prize of ‘Best player of round 38’.
After an amazing season in Spain, Wu Lei can finally rest and take his surgery operation for his shoulder and be ready for the next season, where he will be able to start the Pre Season training with Espanyol and take the chance to also shine on the European stage, and maybe, finally become a factor with the National Team under the new managing experience of Marcello Lippi. Indeed, if Wu Lei numbers with Shanghai Sipg were outstanding, with China NT he was never able to prove his talent with only 15 goals on 63 caps.
Wang Shuang in France
Wu Lei who? The very very big name of Chinese Football is Wang Shuang, former Dalian Quanjian midfielder, last summer she moved to Paris Saint Germain Ladies, where she proved to be one of the best footballers in the world. Compare Wu Lei with Wang Shuang would be a big mistake, because she is the biggest name on Female Asian Football (she was awarded as that on AFC 2018 Ceremony) like the Korean Son Hueng Min is it for Asian Male Football.
Wang Shuang is only 24 years old, she is not a goleador, but a forward play maker who can accelerate the game of his team: and on her first European season she shined with PSG Ladies. The French side ended second in the domestic League and Wang Shuang scored 7 goals and served 8 assists in 18 games. She scored the first goal on the debut match with a powerful kick from 25 metres and also was the first Chinese player to score a goal in Uefa Women’s Champions League, on Round of 16, against the Swedish side Linkoping.
It is clear that the numbers of Wang Shuang are far much more better then Wu Lei ones, indeed, PSG supporters refer to her as ‘Lady Messi’ after the firsts outstanding performances. Another big difference between Wang Shuang and Wu lei are the performance with the National Team: if the former Sipg player sometimes was also left on the bench, ‘Lady Messi’ is always a crucial player as she showed last year on Asian Cup and Asian Games. She also already played a World Cup in 2015 in Canada and on that year, in a friendship game, when she was only 21, she scored the goal that allowed China to beat USA, causing a home defeat for the American NT after a decade.
The season for Wang Shuang is not over yet: she will be the leading member of Chinese Women’s National team (Steel Roses) at the upcoming World Cup in France, where China will make his debut against Germany on June 8, in a match against one of the strongest team in the competition. On Group B, the Steel Roses will also face South Africa and Spain. Both European sides have a better Fifa ranking then China, that is slowly declining in the last decade. For Wang Shuang and Co. will be very difficult prevail against them (almost impossible against Germany), but the qualification for Round of 16 is a result that must be achieved if we consider that with a 24 teams format, also the 4 best 3th ranked team on group stages can advance.
After the retirement of the legendary Sun Wen (106 goals with the National team), China lost his status of World and Continental football power: now on the Asian Scene North Korea, Japan and Australia surpassed the Steel Roses, that doesn’t win an Asian Cup since 2006, while on World Cup stage, is more then 20 years that they don’t reach the semifinals. A realistic aim for China will be the qualification for Quarter Finals as four years ago.
Hope for a hopeless country
Wu Lei and Wang Shuang are the only hope for a hopeless football country. Currently, there are others female Chinese players that can have a good impact on European Football like Shanshan or Li Ying, while for male football is almost impossible to find a player with the same talent of Wu Lei and also the next generation of U23 seems to be very far from his level.
Both, Wu lei and Wang Shuang proved that also China, like Japan and South Korea can produce good or excellent talents for European football, but there is still a gap of 20 years between China and the two Top East Asian Country that will not be easy to equalize their quality level until policy and bureaucracy will have a big influence on football at all levels in China.
Also, the future, especially for Male Football, doesn’t appear very bright: while the country is discussing if is legit or not to give the citizenship to Elkeson and Ricardo Goulart to improve the quality of the NT, the U18 side last week was completely trashed in a friendship tournament in Chengdu, losing all of the three matches (against Thailand, New Zealand and South Korea) failing also to score one goal. Is not a single tournament the problem, but the results of all the youth NT (U16, 19 and 23), that from 2016 till now, failed to achieved to reach the knock out stage of the Group Age Asian Cup.
This is the scenario: with the next generation of Chinese Football Players that seems to be worst then the current one, the sports authorities, to hide this big problem, are trying to improve the situation in a short term program, giving the citizenship to Foreign players who played in China for 5 consecutive Years. In this way, China admit to be a Hopeless Football Country that maybe will not see a new Wu Lei.
Wu Lei e Wang Shuang: l’unica speranza per un movimento calcistico senza speranze?

Mentre la Cina non è riuscita a esportare giocatori di qualità in Europa negli ultimi anni, il Giappone e la Corea del Sud sono in grado di farlo regolarmente, e non solo nel vecchio continente, ma anche sui grandi campionati del Medio Oriente, in Qatar e in Arabia Saudita. Solo nel 2018 \ 19 qualcosa è cambiato per la Cina, con il passaggio dei due più grandi giocatori del calcio maschile e femminile, Wu Lei e Wang Shuang.
Wu Lei all’Espanyol
Wu Lei (28), è il più grande nome nel calcio cinese: nel 2018 è stato premiato come MVP e Top Goalscorer della Super League cinese che ha vinto con Shanghai Sipg. Dopo una Coppa asiatica fra alti e bassi, dove ha giocato con un infortunio alla spalla, segnando due gol sorprendenti contro le Filippine nella fase a gironi, ha finalmente realizzato il suo trasferimento in Europa, all’Espanyol (squadra di proprietà cinese). Wu Lei ha fatto il suo debutto nella prima occasione, il 3 febbraio, negli ultimi 12 minuti di un pareggio per 2-2 contro il Villareal.
L’ex star di Sipg è stato in grado di adattarsi molto rapidamente a un nuovo contesto calcistico, facendo il suo esordio sull’XI di partenza della terza partita contro il Valencia (0-0) e poi ha segnato il primo gol nella quinta partita giocata su un 3 -1 vittoria contro Rayo Vallecano, rete ampiamente celebrata dai media, anche dalla Liga e dal Real Madrid. Dopo due sconfitte consecutive contro Siviglia e Barcellona, dove Wu ha affrontato Lionel Messi senza impressionare, Espanyol ha iniziato una marcia inarrestabile dalla battaglia per evitare la retrocessione fino alla qualificazione in Europa League 2019 \ 20 con 5 vittorie e 4 pareggi.
Dopo essere stato lasciato in panchina per tutta la partita contro il Levante, Wu Lei ha segnato un gol decisivo nel 34 ° turno contro Celta Vigo con un pareggio per 1-1, mentre nell’ultimo round della Liga ha segnato il definitivo 2-0. contro la Real Sociedad, un risultato che ha permesso all’Espanyol di raggiungere la qualificazione per la competizione europea del prossimo anno. Wang Shuang in Francia
Wu Lei chi? Il nome molto grande del calcio cinese è Wang Shuang, ex centrocampista del Dalian Quanjian, la scorsa estate si è trasferita a Paris Saint Germain Ladies, dove si è dimostrata una delle migliori calciatrici al mondo. Confrontare Wu Lei con Wang Shuang sarebbe un grosso errore, perché lei è il nome più grande su del calcio asiatico femminile (nel 2018 è stata premiata come Women’s Best footballer agli AFC Awards) così come Son Hueng Min lo è per il calcio maschile
Wang Shuang ha solo 24 anni, non è una goleador, ma una fantasista che può accelerare il gioco della sua squadra. Nella sua prima stagione europea ha brillato con PSG Ladies. La squadra francese si è classificata seconda nella lega nazionale e Wang Shuang ha segnato 7 gol e servito 8 assist in 18 partite. Ha segnato il primo gol della partita d’esordio con un potente calcio da 25 metri ed è stato anche il primo giocatore cinese a segnare un gol in Uefa Women’s Champions League, negli ottavi di finale, contro la squadra svedese del Linkoping.
È chiaro che i numeri di Wang Shuang sono molto meglio di quelli di Wu Lei, anzi, i sostenitori del PSG si riferiscono a lei come “Lady Messi” dopo le prime esibizioni eccezionali. Un’altra grande differenza tra Wang Shuang e Wu lei sono le prestazioni con la Nazionale: se l’ex giocatore di Sipg a volte è stato lasciatoa volte in panchina, “Lady Messi” è sempre un giocatore cruciale come ha dimostrato l’anno scorso in Asian Cup e Asian Games . Ha anche giocato una Coppa del Mondo nel 2015 in Canada e in quell’anno, in una partita amichevole, quando aveva solo 21 anni, ha segnato la rete che ha permesso alla Cina di battere gli Stati Uniti, causando una sconfitta interna per il Team Americano dopo un decennio.
La stagione di Wang Shuang non è ancora finita: sarà la protagonista della squadra femminile cinese (Steel Roses) nella prossima Coppa del Mondo in Francia, dove la Cina farà il suo debutto contro la Germania l’8 giugno, in una partita contro una della squadra più forte nella competizione. Nel Gruppo B, le Steel Roses affronteranno anche Sudafrica e Spagna. Entrambe le squadre europee hanno un ranking Fifa migliore della Cina. Per Wang Shuang e Co. sarà molto difficile prevalere contro di loro (quasi impossibile contro la Germania), ma la qualificazione per gli ottavi di finale è un risultato che deve essere raggiunto se consideriamo che con un formato di 24 squadre, anche i 4 migliori terzi classificati possono avanzare.

Un Paese senza Speranza?
Wu Lei e Wang Shuang sono l’unica speranza per un paese di calcio senza speranza. Attualmente, ci sono altri giocatori femminili cinesi che possono avere un buon impatto sul calcio europeo come Shanshan o Li Ying, mentre per il calcio maschile è quasi impossibile trovare un giocatore con lo stesso talento di Wu Lei e anche la prossima generazione di U23 sembra essere molto lontano dal suo livello.
Entrambi, Wu lei e Wang Shuang hanno dimostrato che anche la Cina, come il Giappone e la Corea del Sud, possono produrre talenti buoni o eccellenti per il calcio europeo, ma tra Cina e i due Paesi dell’Estremo Oriente c’è ancora un gap di 20 anni che non sarà facile da colmare fino a quando la politica e la burocrazia avranno una grande influenza sul calcio a tutti i livelli in Cina.
Inoltre, il futuro, in particolare per il calcio maschile non sembra molto brillante: mentre il paese sta discutendo se è legittimo o no dare la cittadinanza a Elkeson e Ricardo Goulart per migliorare la qualità del NT, il lato U18 della scorsa settimana è stato completamente umiliato in un torneo amichevole a Chengdu, perdendo tutte e tre le partite (contro Thailandia, Nuova Zelanda e Corea del Sud) senza riuscire a segnare un gol. Non è un singolo torneo il problema, ma i risultati di tutte le rappresentative giovanili (U16, 19 e 23), che dal 2016 fino ad oggi, non sono riusciti a raggiungere la fase a eliminazione diretta delle rispettive Coppe d’Asia.
Questo è lo scenario: con la prossima generazione di calciatori cinesi che sembra essere peggiore di quella attuale, le autorità sportive, per nascondere questo grosso problema, stanno cercando di migliorare la situazione in un programma a breve termine, dando la cittadinanza agli stranieri giocatori che hanno giocato in Cina per 5 anni consecutivi. In questo modo, la Cina ammette di essere un Paese di calcio senza speranza che forse non vedrà un nuovo Wu Lei.
