La Coppa d’Asia in quest’edizione presenta tre compagini provenienti dall’AESAN: Filippine, Thailandia e Vietnam. Per scoprire al meglio queste realtà, per la sezione ‘La parola agli esperti’ della nostra rubrica #RoadtoUAE2019 abbiamo intervistato Gabriel Tan, giornalista di FoxSportsAsia, esperto in materia di calcio nell’area del sudest asiatico.
Le Filippine di Sven Goran Eriksson (ex di Guangzhou R&F, Shanghai Sipg e Shenzhen) saranno l’avversario della Cina nella fase a gironi. Recentemente hanno raggiunto le semifinali nella AFF Suzuki Cup, hai visto miglioramenti sotto la gestione dello svedese? Possono essere un valido avversario per la Cina o il percorso di crescita deve ancora completarsi?
Per me i miglioramenti sono indipendenti da Eriksson. E’ vero, è giunto nelle Filippine con ottime credenziali vista la sua esperienza in Europa, ma comunque non ha avuto molto tempo per lavorare e conoscere bene i punti di forza e debolezza dei giocatori a sua disposizione. La sua esperienza porterà sicuramente benefici alle Filippine, ma sarà molto importante il lavoro dei suoi assistenti, Scott Cooper e Chris Greatwich. Il calxcio nelle Filippine si è sviluppato molto recentemente, ma la strada da fare è ancora lunga per raggiungere i livelli dei top team asiatici. I filippini sono noti per il loro spirito combattivo e non sarà facile per la Cina, grazie anche a giocatori provenienti da campionati europei quali Neil Etheridge e Stephan Shrock
Il nuovo re dell’ASEAN è il Vietnam: questo 2018 è stato magico per la nazionale del sudest asiatico: hanno raggiunto la finale in Coppa d’Asia U23 e hanno vinto la AFF Suzuki Cup. Il 21enne Nguyen Quang è in rampa di lancio ed ha brillato in entrambe le competizioni. Può diventare la nuova stella del calcio asiatico durante questa competizione? Cosa ti aspetti dal Vietnam il prossimo mese?
Come hai giustamente sottolineato, il Vietnam è il nuovo re dell’ASEAN e Nguyen Quang Hai è emerso come una vera star del sud-est asiatico. Il futuro sembra estremamente brillante per lui e le buone prestazioni nella Coppa d’Asia non faranno che migliorare la sua reputazione. Ha già dimostrato di poter competere con le migliori squadre asiatiche al livello Under 23 sia durante l’AFC U-23 che ai giochi asiatici, ed è il tipo di giocatore che sarà entusiasmato dalla prospettiva di mettersi alla prova contro i migliori difensori asiatici. Park Hang-seo ha anche dimostrato di essere un eccellente allenatore che è in linea con la moderna filosofia del calcio e non ha paura di giocare con i giovani. Con il nuovo formato della Coppa d’Asia che dà la possibilità alle squadre terze classificate di qualificarsi per gli ottavi di finale, mi aspetto che sia l’obiettivo minimo per il Vietnam.
La Thailandia è stata eliminata in semifinale dalla Malesia nell’ultima AFF Suzuki Cup. Non è un buon momento per la nazionale dell’allenatore Milovan Rejevac. Il gruppo A non sembra impossibile per la Thailandia, come pensi che possano andare? Ad eccezione di Chanatip Sonkrasin (attaccante in Giappone in forza al Consadole Sapporo) ci sono altri giocatori interessanti nella squadra thailandese che possono figurare bene nella competizione?
È stata una deludente per la Thailandia per l’eliminazione nella Suzuki Cup, ma c’era il sentore che non l’avrebbero presa troppo sul serio per concentrarsi sulla Coppa d’Asia. In effetti, il Gruppo A non è impossibile per la Thailandia e considerando che hanno raggiunto il terzo turno delle qualificazioni per la Coppa del mondo (essendo effettivamente una delle migliori 12 squadre asiatiche) l’obiettivo deve essere raggiungere la fase a eliminazione diretta. A parte Chanathip, penso che i giocatori che militano all’estero come Kawin Thamsatchanan (OH Leuven) e Teerasil Dangda (Sanfrecce Hiroshima) cercheranno di dimostrare di aver portato il loro gioco al livello successivo da quando hanno lasciato il loro paese d’origine. Mi aspetto di veder emergere il ventenne Supachai Jaided, che ha già giocato per Buriram United nella AFC Champions League in questa stagione ed è stato impressionante alla Suzuki Cup.

There are three ASEAN Teams in this Asian Cup, one is in the group of China: Philippines with Sven Goran Eriksson, who was a coach in China (R&F, Sipg and Shenzhen). They reached semifinals at AFF Suzuki Cup, did you see any improvement under Eriksson? Can they be a serious contender for China or ther’s still a long way to go?
For me, the jury is still out on Sven-Goran Eriksson. He arrives in Philippines with excellent credentials, especially given his time in Europe. The reason I say this is because the timing of his appointment means he has not had a lot of time to work with his players and fully get to know their strengths and weaknesses. While his experience will definitely be beneficial to Philippines, I think much of the work will also be done by his assistants Scott Cooper and Chris Greatwich. Philippines football has improved so much in recent years but there’s obviously still some way to go for them to match the strongest teams in Asia. But Philippines are known for their fighting spirit and they will definitely look to give China a battle, even more so with players with top-level European experience like Neil Etheridge and Stephan Schrock. I still think China will be too good for Philippines, but that match could be a bit of a battle.
The new King of ASEAN is Vietnam: this 2018 was magic for the SE nation in football: they reached the final in Asian Cup U23 and they won the AFF Suzuki Cup. The 21 years old Nguyen Quang Hai seems on fire this year. Can he become the new shining star of Asian football during this competition? What do you expect from Vietnam next month?
As you rightfully pointed out, Vietnam are the new kings of ASEAN and Nguyen Quang Hai has emerged as a real star of Southeast Asia. The future looks extremely bright for him and good performances at the Asian Cup will only enhance his reputation. He has already shown he can match it with Asia’s top teams at Under-23 level at the AFC U-23 Championship and Asian Games, and he is the type of player who will be excited by the prospect of testing himself against Asia’s best defenders. Park Hang-seo has also proven to be an excellent coach who is in line with modern football philosophy and not afraid to play youngsters. With the new format of the Asian Cup giving a chance to the third-placed teams to qualify for the Round of 16, I expect that to be the minimum target for Vietnam.
Thailand was eliminated in semifinals by Malaysia in the last AFF Suzuki Cup. Is not a good moment for the NT of coach Milovan Rejevac. The group A seems not impossible for Thailand, how do you think they can figure out? Except for Chanatip Sonkrasin (forward in Japan at Consadole Sapporo) are there other interesting players in the Thai team that can figure well in the competition?
It was a disappointing Suzuki Cup campaign for Thailand but there was the suggestion that they would not be taking it too seriously but instead focusing on the Asian Cup. Indeed, Group A is not impossible for Thailand and considering they reached the third round of World Cup qualifiers (effectively being one of Asia’s top 12 teams) the target has to be to reach the knockout stage. Apart from Chanathip, I think overseas-based players like Kawin Thamsatchanan (OH Leuven) and Teerasil Dangda (Sanfrecce Hiroshima) will be looking to show that they have taken their game to the next level since playing abroad. The one player who I hope makes the final squad is 20-year-old Supachai Jaided, who has already played for Buriram
