Another great weekend of Chinese Football, today Shanghai Sipg is gonna face Shandong Luneng, but tomorros is time for Canton Derby between Evergrande and R&F. Blog Calcio Cina had an interview with John Hasset, chief organizer of the Fuligans, a particoular supporter group of Guangzhou R&F (@GzFuligans on twitter)

Who are the Fuligans?

The Fuligans are the international supporters group of Guangzhou R&F. We are officially recognized by the club as an official group. We are the CSL’s only official international fan group. Foreigners go to the other clubs individually but they are dotted around the ground we are the only one who go as a group. We have 73 season ticket holders so are also quite a large fan group for our club.

How did the Fuligans born?

We were started by a person working at the British Business Council who was invited to a game. He went and met someone from the club. Enjoyed the game brought some mates to other games. Season ended and with the club decided to form a small group. It was mainly British fans and it went on from there. A couple of years ago he moved to Beijing so I took over sorting the group. With the support of R&F we decided to develop the group more so with their and other Fiuligans help we have developed the group. We now have 73 season ticket holders from 14 different countries which includes families, ladies and men all linked together by a love of football.

You are a foreign group of supporters, what about your relation with local fans?

We get on great with the local fans. I think they love the fact we are a mad group of foreigners who support R&F especially as Evergrande are down the road. We chant with them and they chant with us. Often when we chant in English they stop their drums and stuff. We get pretty loud. I suppose the best example of our relationship is the Blue Dream who are R&F’s biggest fan group. Chinese fans in general get into the game early. We have a beer outside and get in just before the game. The Blue Dream always hold an area for us at the front alongside them which we really appreciate. So we are very close with the locals. We have been going to the games for 5 years now so our commitment is recognized and appreciated by the other fans and the club.

Describe me a match day in Guangzhou at the Yuexiushan Stadium

Some of us meet up early for a few drinks and a catch up at a bar. We then head off to the stadium. Just outside our stadium is a little shop that’s sells drinks. So this is our meeting point for everyone including our families just outside the ground. It’s a good spot to watch the crowds coming in have a drink or two and say hello to every one. R&F are a relatively small club in China with quite small crowds so it’s very relaxed and fun atmosphere outside the ground.
We watch the game and get a win hopefully. After the game we all merge on our shop for another drink or two and discuss the game. Then people head off. Families go home but for many of us we pop to a sports bar as when our games end the Premier League games are just starting to kick off. So we go and watch them

What about the culture of football in Guangzhou? there are two strong clubs in the city, but what can you tell me about football at grassroot level, or amateur football?

Football is very strong in Guangzhou and really always has been. Probably helped by its close location to Hong Kong. Yuexiushan our stadium is also one of the old original homes of Chinese football so Guangzhou has a long football history. (Maybe a good topic for the future). At grass roots level their are lots of leagues and lots of venues for football especially all weather 7 aside pitches. The women’s game is also very strong in the City.
I am not sure of what Evergrande do but R&F are very focused on youth development and are probably quietly one of the leading clubs in this area in the CSL. The youth teams travel all over their U12’s for example are just returning from a tournament in Japan. Guangzhou R&F U19’s play in the Hong Kong professional league to get proper match development our current young center half is a great example of this process. There has been the big focus on the inclusion of an U23 player this year in the CSL. R&F had one playing last year so the youth program is  working, it’s serious and developing. What is also good is that the Manager Dragan Stojkovic is not scared to include and play the youngsters. The Hong Kong league team is sitting under the radar but a great lesson to the rest of the CSL for player development.

9 points in three matches, can R&F reach a slot for the Asian Champions League 2018?

I really hope so. I think we will definitely be in the mix for a qualifying slot. We do not have the on paper stars of the bigger sides in the league. However we have a really good manager who has the side playing to his system. We are a hard working side and including our Internationals our players all put a great effort in every game.
A really positive start for us both in points but also we are the only side to not concede a goal yet.
So a long way to go but a great start for us as one of the smallest clubs in the league.

We always focus on foreign players, but i was really impressed by Zhengyu, a center back born in 1997. Can he be the future for R&F and National team?

Very much so this is an exceptional Chinese player. I would pretty much guarantee he will be an international for China and I actually think he will one day captain the Chinese team. He is the youngest central defender In the CSL. A really exceptional talent.
There were big comments before the season started on the R&F defense as the experienced players were transferred out.  Yet as mentioned earlier. 3 games and 0 goals conceded. Great courage by the manager to go with the youngster. Now what’s weird in China is the forwards are usually the imported internationals so this young lad has come into the side and lived and looked comfortable with and against top quality forwards.
He is both an exceptional player but also has a great head on his shoulders. He is a credit to the R& F development system coming through the Hong Kong R&F team experience. He has received great support and help developing from Dragan Stojkovic our manager.
He is paying that back great performances. Saturday against Evergrande will be a major test for him. I hope he does himself proud.

The Guangzhou derby next week: i know that the Jingjing derby, or the shanghai derby, and even the Delta Yangtze derby are very violent, and sometimes there are troubles outside the stadium. What about the atmosphere of a derby in Guangzhou?

There is never any trouble at the Guangzhou derbies. It’s very amicable. At Evergrandes ground Tianhe the fans mix outside. Inside R&F fans are only in the away end. At Yuexiushan our home stadium the big fan groups from Evergrande are in the away end. There are the R&F fan group area and then the rest of the stadium is mixed with red shirts dotted amongst the R&F fans.So it’s really good that way in Guangzhou and long may it continue. It might be the difference sizes of the club & the fan bases that mean there is no trouble or just their good attitude down south!!

Your favourite moment in a Guangzhou Derby and your prediction for the match of saturday

Definitely Eran Zahavi’s goal last year. Late on it was 1-1 and we were under a lot of pressure and then Zahavi scored to make it 2-1. So not sure whether my best moment is the goal or the final whistle 10 minutes later. Very rare we beat Evergrande. We played them 4 times last year with 2 games in the cup. We did really well against them last year. Saturday would love to win and fancied our chances as they have had a slow start this year. However they looked very good and got a good win against SIPG last week. So hoping for a 1-0 win but would settle on a draw. Prediction 1-0 to Guangxhou R& F

Thank you very much Jhon and good luck for the derby
